Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUyaynah said: Ibn Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm informed us, stating,
“My father used to sit clasping his knees and would not loosen that posture until he had recited the Quran.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm said, “When Saʿd died he was seventy-two years old.”
I (the author) say: This means that his birth fell within the lifetime of ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers.
185 – ʿUmayr ibn Hāniʾ al-ʿAbsī ad-Dārānī, Abū al-Walīd (ʿ)
An eminent imām, known as Abū al-Walīd.
He heard (hadith) from Muʿāwiyah, Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Hurayrah, and a number of others.
The hadith he narrated from Muʿāwiyah appears in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
Those who reported from him include al-Zuhri, Qatādah, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, al-Awzāʿī, Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir, and Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
He served as al-Ḥajjāj’s deputy in Kūfah, and later oversaw taxation for ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
It is said that he met thirty Companions.
Ibn Jābir related: “He would laugh and then say, ‘It has reached me that Abū al-Dardāʾ remarked, “I refresh myself so that I may be more energetic in upholding the truth.”’
I said to him, ‘I notice you never tire of remembrance; how many times do you glorify Allah?’
He replied, ‘One hundred thousand—unless my fingers miscount.’ ”
Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz reported from him that ʿAbd al-Malik sent him with letters to al-Ḥajjāj while the latter was besieging Ibn al-Zubayr.
Al-ʿIjli said: “He is a Successor, reliable.”
Al-Fasawī said: “There is no harm in him.”
I (the author) add: He transmitted only a few reports. He loathed al-Ḥajjāj’s oppression and left him, saying, “Whenever he wrote to me…”
