Al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzār informed us; Tamīm ibn Abī Saʿīd informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān informed us; Abū Yaʿlā of Mosul narrated to us; Ismāʿīl, the grandson of al-Suddī, narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from Abū Ḥaṣīn, from ʿUmayr ibn Saʿd, from ʿAlī ﵁, who said:
“I did not know of anyone upon whom I enforced a prescribed punishment except the wine-drinker, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laid down no specific ruling for it; it was only something we ourselves decreed.” (1)
This is a fair (ḥasan) hadith with an elevated chain.
It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah through Ismāʿīl ibn Mūsā; our chain corresponds to theirs while being higher in rank.
