Abū al-Qāsim Ibn Manda said, “(He died in) the year 132 AH, a little after the coming of the Sudān; later he placed it in 133 AH—Allah knows best.”
Among the reports whose chains up to Manṣūr are unusually short is the following: Ahmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn Muʾayyad al-Miṣrī related it to us in Rajab, 695 AH. He was informed by Abū al-Faraj al-Fath ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Kātib in Baghdad; likewise Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭarāʾifī, and Abū Ghālib Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī told us, saying:
Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Muʿaddal narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān transmitted it to us in 380 AH at our residence; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan, the ḥāfiẓ, handed it down to us in 298 AH; ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“Three traits—whoever possesses them is a hypocrite: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays. Whoever has one of these traits has within him a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it.” (1)
Using the same chain, Jaʿfar said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; Manṣūr informed me—I heard Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh—who traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ: “The mark of the hypocrite …,” and he mentioned wording to that effect.
ʿAmr added, “I know of no one who corroborated Abū Dāwūd in this, though he is trustworthy.”
I say: that is, he alone reported it as a Prophetic narration.
