I say: The same date is given by al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī, al-Wāqidī, Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Ibn Numayr, Aḥmad, Khalīfah, Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās, and many others.
Yaḥyā ibn Ādam transmitted that Abū Bakr said, “We buried Abū Isḥāq during the days of the Khārijites, in 127 AH.”
Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal likewise stated, “He died on the day Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays entered Kufah, in 127 AH.”
Muḥammad ibn Yazīd relates: “I heard Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh say, ‘When Ḍaḥḥāk entered Kufah he saw the funeral and the size of the crowd and remarked, “It seems there is a rabbānī among them.”’ ”
Abū Nuʿaym and Abū ʿUbayd, however, placed his death in 128 AH, but the first opinion is the sounder one.
He lived for ninety-three years, and between him and me there are 7 intermediaries by ijāzah-granting transmission and 8 through an unbroken isnād.
Ahmad ibn Salāmah and others informed us in their written collections, saying: ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Kulayb narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Bayān narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Makhlad narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us with his Companions, so we assumed iḥrām for Hajj. When we reached Mecca he said, ‘Turn your Hajj into ʿumrah.’
The people said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have already entered iḥrām for Hajj; how can we make it ʿumrah?’
He replied, ‘Pay attention to what I command you and do it.’
They kept responding to him, and he became angry. He then left until he entered upon ʿĀʾishah while still upset. Seeing the anger on his face, she asked, ‘Who has angered you? May Allah anger him.’
He said, ‘Why should I not be angry when I give a command and I am not obeyed?!’ (1)
