ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Saʿīd and others narrated: “Abu al-Tiyāḥ told us, from Anas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Madinah he dismounted in the upper quarter of the city with the Banu ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf and stayed among them for fourteen nights. He then sent word to the elders of Banu al-Najjār, and they came with their swords girded. It is as though I can still see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with Abū Bakr riding behind him and the men of Banu al-Najjār surrounding him, until he halted in the courtyard of Abū Ayyūb.” Agreed upon.
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī related—from his father, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—who said: When the Prophet ﷺ entered Madinah he passed by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy, who was seated on a raised part of the road. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped, hoping he would invite him to lodge with him, for on that day ʿAbd Allāh was regarded as the chief of the people of Madinah. But ʿAbd Allāh said, “Go to those who have already invited you.” So the Prophet turned to Saʿd ibn Khaythamah and stayed with him among the Banu ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf for three nights. He set aside that place as a mosque and prayed there; later the Banu ʿAmr built it up, and it is the mosque that was founded upon piety and Divine approval.
On the following Friday he mounted his camel, passed by the clan of Banu Sālim, and led the congregational prayer among them. This was the first Friday he prayed after reaching Madinah, and he faced Jerusalem. When the Jews saw him praying toward their qibla they became hopeful of him, in accordance with what they found written about him in their scriptures. He then set out again, and the Anṣār gathered round him, exalting the religion of Allah. They walked beside the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, each one vying with another for its rein, until he said, “Leave the camel alone, for I will only dismount where Allah makes her kneel.” He continued until he reached the house of Abū Ayyūb in the quarter of Banu Ghanm; the camel knelt at the door, so he dismounted and entered Abū Ayyūb’s house, lodging with him until he had built his mosque and residence among the Banu Ghanm. The site of the mosque was a drying-yard for dates belonging to the two sons of Asʿad ibn Zurārah’s paternal uncle, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acquired it and granted the two sons
