Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān al-Khasshāb told me; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad the jurist told us; ʿAyn al-Shams al-Thaqafiyyah told us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī informed us; Abū Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm informed us; Abū Shaykh informed us; Ibn Abī Ḥātim narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; ʿAtīq ibn Yaʿqūb al-Zubayrī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, from Abū al-Zubayr, who said:
“I heard Abū Usaid, while Ibn ʿAbbās was issuing a legal verdict that one dīnār might be exchanged for two dīnārs, whereupon Abū Usaid rebuked him harshly.
Ibn ʿAbbās said, ‘Abū Usaid, I never thought anyone who knows my kinship to the Messenger of Allah would say such a thing!’
Abū Usaid replied, ‘I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “A dīnār for a dīnār, a dirham for a dirham, a ṣāʿ (measure) of wheat for a ṣāʿ of wheat, a ṣāʿ of barley for a ṣāʿ of barley, and a ṣāʿ of salt for a ṣāʿ of salt—no surplus is allowed in any of that.”’
Ibn ʿAbbās then said, ‘What I had been saying was merely my own opinion; I had not heard any report on the matter.’ (1)
This narration is not found in the Six Books.
Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās and others said: Abū al-Zubayr died in the year 128 AH, and no date of birth is cited for him.
He was probably a little over eighty years old.
