Abū al-Zubayr narrates from Jābir, traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: “It is not lawful for anyone to carry weapons in Mecca.” (1)
With the same chain: “He ﷺ saw a woman who pleased him, so he went to his wife Zaynab.” (2)
And with that chain as well: “He forbade the plastering of graves.” (3)
These are singular reports (gharāʾib), yet they are found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. (4)
Al-Thawrī transmits—from Abū al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ “visited the House (Kaʿbah) at night.” Muslim records it (5), though in my view its chain is interrupted.
Abū Dāwūd likewise related—through Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū Hurayrah—the hadith: “Your day of breaking the fast is the day when you all break the fast.” (6)
(1) Reported by Muslim, no. 1356, Book of Hajj, chapter: The prohibition of carrying weapons in Mecca without need.
(2) Reported by Muslim, no. 1403, Book of Marriage, chapter: The recommendation that whoever sees a woman and feels desire should go to his wife or concubine and have intercourse with her. The wording is: “A woman advances in the guise of a devil and withdraws in the guise of a devil; so when one of you sees a woman and is attracted, let him go to his family, for that will repel what he feels.” Also transmitted by Abu Dawud (2151), al-Tirmidhi (1158), and Ahmad 3:330, 341, 348, 395. The hadith is further strengthened by a corroborating report recorded by Ahmad 4:231 from Abu Kabshah al-Anmari with a sound chain, and another from Ibn Masud in al-Darimi 2:146. Hence the hadith is authentic.
(3) Reported by Muslim (970) in the Book of Funerals, chapter: The prohibition of plastering the grave. In one version Abu al-Zubayr explicitly stated that he heard it from Jabir, eliminating the suspicion of his tadlis; the hadith is therefore sound. Al-Hakim also declared it authentic (1:370), and the author concurred in his Mukhtasar.
(4) In sum, any narration of Abu al-Zubayr conveyed with the vague expressions “from” (*an*), “he said,” and the like—whether found in the Sahih collections or elsewhere—is to be rejected, for he was known for tadlis (concealing an intermediary). When he says “I heard” or “he informed us,” his report is acceptable; it is likewise accepted when he uses “from” in transmissions that only al-Layth ibn Saʿd relates from him.
(5) This is an error on the part of the author: Muslim did not record the hadith. Al-Bukhari merely cited it in suspended form (3:452, Book of Hajj, chapter: The visit on the Day of Sacrifice), quoting Abu al-Zubayr from ʿAʾishah and Ibn ʿAbbas: “The Prophet ﷺ delayed the visit (tawaf al-ifadah) until night.” A continuous chain is supplied by Abu Dawud (2000), al-Tirmidhi (920), Ahmad 6:207, and Ibn Majah (3059) through Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu al-Zubayr. Ibn al-Qattan al-Fasi noted that this report contradicts what Ibn ʿUmar and Jabir—both in the two Sahihs—narrated: the Prophet ﷺ performed tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice, then returned and prayed the noon prayer in Mina.
(6) Abu Dawud did not transmit it through Abu al-Zubayr from Abu Hurayrah; rather, he recorded it (no. 2324) via Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir from Abu Hurayrah. All the transmitters are reliable, yet the chain is interrupted, for Ibn al-Munkadir never met Abu Hurayrah; however, …
