and after they had gone only a little way they found a skin of honey lying in the road. They dismounted and ate the cheese along with the honey.
Suwayd ibn Saʿīd said: Khalid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yamāmī narrated to us:
Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir was once entrusted with a deposit. He later fell into hardship and spent it. Its owner came to reclaim it, so Muhammad performed ablution, prayed, and supplicated, saying, “O You who seal the air with the sky, who presses the earth upon the water, O One who existed before everyone and will remain after everyone—settle this trust on my behalf.” He then heard a voice saying, “Take this; repay the trust with it, and keep the sermon short, for you will never see me.” Ibn Abī al-Dunyā transmitted the report from Suwayd. It was said that the amount was one hundred dinars. He continued, “There was a purse in his sandal, so he paid it to its owner.” (1)
Al-Wāqidī said, “Our companions relate that the one who placed it there was ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr; acts of this sort were frequent with him.”
Ibn al-Mājishūn remarked, “Simply looking at Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir benefits me in my religion.”
Al-Wāqidī, Ibn al-Madīnī, Khalīfah, and others said: Ibn al-Munkadir died in the year 130 AH. Al-Fasawī said: rather, it was 131 AH.
It is said that the musnad narrations transmitted by Ibn al-Munkadir exceed two hundred hadiths.
Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz the Qur’an-reciter informed us in the year 692 AH, together with Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Fatḥ, Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, Ibrāhīm ibn Ghālib, Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf, Abū al-Maḥāsin Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Ḥazm, Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Fārisī, and Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-ʿUqaylī—hearing from them at various times. They said:
ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Sakhāwī informed us, and I read to ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ, Lu’lu’ al-Muḥsinī, ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Qanādīlī, and Sulaymān ibn Qudāmah. They said:
ʿAlī ibn Hibat Allāh al-Khaṭīb informed us, and I read to ʿAbd al-Muʿṭī ibn al-Bāshiq and ʿAbd al-Muḥsin ibn Hibat Allāh
