—and he did the same with it, after which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself drank. Abū Bakr says, “We spent the night there and then moved on. The woman thereafter used to call him ‘the Blessed One.’ Her flock multiplied so abundantly that she later brought a whole drove to Medina. Abū Bakr passed by; her son recognized him and said, ‘Mother, this is the man who was with the Blessed One.’ She came over and said, ‘Servant of Allah, who was the man traveling with you?’ He replied, ‘Do you not know who he was?’ She said, ‘No.’ He answered, ‘It was the Prophet ﷺ.’ She said, ‘Then take me to him.’ He brought her to the Prophet, who offered her food and bestowed gifts upon her.”

This narration is transmitted by Muḥammad ibn ʿImrān ibn Abī Laylā and Asad ibn Mūsā from Yaḥyā; its chain is clean, though there is a break between Abū Bakr and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā.

Aws ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Buraydah reported: al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid narrated to us from Ibn Buraydah, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ used to look for good omens. Quraysh had set a reward of one hundred camels for anyone who could bring him back to them. Buraydah mounted with seventy men of Banū Sahm and encountered the Prophet by night. The Prophet asked him, “Who are you?” He answered, “Buraydah.” The Prophet turned to Abū Bakr and said, “Our affair is cooled and set right” (playing on the root of Buraydah). He then asked, “From which tribe?” Buraydah replied, “From Aslam.” The Prophet said to Abū Bakr, “We are safe” (aslam). He asked again, “From which clan?” He said, “From Banū Sahm.” The Prophet said, “Your arrow has hit the mark” (sahm). Buraydah and all those with him embraced Islam. At dawn Buraydah said to the Prophet ﷺ, “Do not enter Medina without a banner.” He untied his own turban, fastened it to a spear, and walked in front of the Prophet, saying, “O Prophet of Allah, lodge with me.” The Prophet replied, “My she-camel is under command,” and she continued until she knelt at the door of Abū Ayyūb’s house. (The author comments: Aws is a discarded transmitter.)

The ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭiyālisī said: ʿUbayd Allah ibn Iyād ibn Laqīṭ narrated to us; my father narrated to us from Qays ibn al-Nuʿmān, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr set out in secret, they passed by a slave shepherding sheep and asked him for milk. He replied, “I have no ewe that yields milk, but there is a young she-goat here that conceived at the start of winter. She is near term and has no milk left.” The Prophet said, “Bring her.” He brought her; the Prophet ﷺ steadied her, wiped her udder, and prayed until milk descended. Abū Bakr fetched a shield, and the Prophet milked her and gave Abū Bakr a drink.
