I went to him and said, “May I come in?”
He answered, “Come in.”
I found him shaping wooden goblets on a lathe. I greeted him: “How are you this morning? May Allah set your affairs right.”
He regarded that as unwanted publicity and thought it excessive coming from me. When I noticed this I said, “Brother, I heard you adjuring Allah last night. Would you allow me to provide for your upkeep so that you can leave this work and devote yourself entirely to what you seek of the Hereafter?”
He replied, “No; but I ask something else of you: do not mention me to anyone, do not speak of this incident to anyone until I die, and do not visit me, Ibn al-Munkadir, for if you come you will make me known to the people.”
I said, “I long to meet you.”
He said, “Then meet me in the mosque.”
(He was of Persian origin.) Ibn al-Munkadir never spoke of the matter to anyone until the man died.
Ibn Wahb said, “I have been informed that he moved away from that house; he was never seen again, and no one knew where he went.”
The people of that house said, “May Allah judge between us and Ibn al-Munkadir; he has driven the righteous man away from us.” ⦗1⦘

He replied, ‘Me? No. But the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—Jābir related to me that he said: “There is no divorce for what you do not possess, and no manumission for what you do not possess.”’ ⦗2⦘
Ahmad ibn Khalīd al-Kindī also transmitted the report from ʿAbdullāh ibn Yazīd.
Al-Walīd ibn Yazīd had in fact summoned Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir along with several jurists, and they issued him a legal opinion concerning the divorce of his wife Umm Salama.
Muhammad ibn Saʿd said: Aḥmad ibn Abī Isḥāq al-ʿAbdī narrated to us; Ḥajjāj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Abū Maʿshar, that al-Munkadir came to the Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah and complained to her
