I remounted my horse and rode on until I reached the two of them. After all that had just happened to keep me from harming them, it struck me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would certainly prevail. I said to him, “Your people have placed a bounty on the two of you,” and I told them what the people were planning. I offered them provisions and supplies, but they took nothing from me, nor did he ask me for anything except to say, “Keep our whereabouts secret.”
I then asked him to have a pact of security written for me, one I could rely on. He ordered ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah to write it on a strip of tanned leather, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on his way. Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mālik ibn Jaʿsham al-Mudlijī informed me that his father told him that his brother Surāqah ibn Jaʿsham told him—then he narrated the story and added: “I brought out my weapons and donned my coat of mail …” and in it he said: “Abū Bakr wrote the document for me and tossed it to me. I returned and kept silent; I mentioned nothing of what had happened until Allah granted the conquest of Mecca and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had completed the campaign of Ḥunayn. I went out to meet him holding the document. I slipped into a battalion of the Anṣār, and they began to tap me with their spears, saying, ‘Back! Back!’ until I came close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on his she-camel. I looked at his shin resting in the saddle-crutch—it was like a fresh palm shoot. I raised the document and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this is your letter.’ He said, ‘Today is a day of loyalty and good faith; come near.’ So I accepted Islam. I then remembered something I wanted to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Ibn Shihāb said: “He asked him about lost livestock and about one other matter.” He continued: “Then I turned back and drove my charity animals to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Al-Bakkaʾī, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, said: I was informed by Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr that she said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr set out, a group of Quraysh men came, among them …”
