ʿAbd al-Razzāq reported: Maʿmar narrated to us and said, “Al-Zuhrī heard two ḥadiths from Ibn ʿUmar.”
I add: He also transmitted from Sahl ibn Saʿd; Anas ibn Mālik—whom he met in Damascus; al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ṣuʿayr; Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ; Maḥmūd ibn Labīd; Sanīn Abū Jamīlah; Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Azhar; Rabīʿah ibn ʿAbbād al-Dīlī; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah; Mālik ibn Aws ibn al-Ḥadathān; Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib—he sat with him for eight years and studied jurisprudence under him; ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqāṣ; Kathīr ibn al-ʿAbbās; Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn; ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr; Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī; Qabīṣah ibn Dhuʾayb; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān; Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh; Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim; Muḥammad ibn al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr; Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah; ʿUthmān ibn Isḥāq al-ʿĀmirī; Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, the freedman of Banū Thābit; Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith; al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad; ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd; Khārijah ibn Zayd ibn Thābit; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik; Abū ʿUmar—a man from Bulay who was a Companion; and Abān ibn ʿUthmān.
His narrations from Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj and ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit are mursal reports, and al-Nasāʾī recorded them. He also has a narration from Abū Hurayrah found in Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī.
ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, who said, “ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to al-Ḥajjāj: ‘Follow Ibn ʿUmar in your pilgrimage rites.’”
So on the Day of ʿArafah al-Ḥajjāj sent word to him: “When you intend to set out, let us know.”
He and Sālim came—while I was with them—after the sun had passed its zenith, and he said, “What is keeping him?”
It was not long before al-Ḥajjāj emerged and said, “The Commander of the Believers has written to me instructing me to follow your example and learn from you.”
Ibn ʿUmar replied, “If you want the Sunnah, then shorten the sermon and the prayer.”
Al-Zuhrī added, “I was fasting that day, and the heat weighed heavily upon me.”
I say: Among those who narrated from him were ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ—who was older than he—and ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—
