al-Shikhkhir, and Abū al-Dahmāʾ Qirfah ibn Buhais, and Abū Rāfiʿ the gold-smith, and Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān, and Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qurṭ, and Saʿd ibn Hishām ibn ʿĀmir, and Khālid ibn ʿUmayr, and Marwān ibn Aws, and Abū Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā, and Abū al-Aḥwaṣ al-Jushamī, and a number of others.
Those who narrated from him were: Ayyūb, ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, ʿAmr ibn Murrah—he passed away long before him—, Ibn ʿAwn, Yūnus, Hishām ibn Ḥassān, Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd, Ḥajjāj al-Ṣawwāf, Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah, Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj, Abū ʿĀmir al-Khazzāz, Abū Hilāl al-Rāsibī, Qurrah ibn Khālid, and many others besides them.
Ibn Maʿīn and al-Nasāʾī declared him reliable.
ʿAlī related from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd who said, “Ibn Sīrīn was not satisfied with Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl.”
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim said, “I mentioned that to my father, and he replied, ‘He got involved in some assignment for the authorities; that is why Ibn Sīrīn disapproved of him. As for hadith, he is trustworthy.’”
Abū Salamah narrated from Abū Hilāl al-Rāsibī who said, “In Basra no one was more knowledgeable than Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl—I make no exception for al-Ḥasan or for Ibn Sīrīn—except that indulging in al-tanāwah (1) harmed him.”
Ibn ʿAdī said, “He possesses a large number of traditions. As for what al-Qaṭṭān reported—that Ibn Sīrīn was not pleased with him—I do not know its basis. Perhaps Ibn Sīrīn objected to him in some other matter unrelated to hadith; with respect to hadith there is nothing wrong with him or with his transmissions.”
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said, “In my assessment he did not meet Abū Rifāʿah al-ʿAdawī.”
I say: His narration from Abū Rifāʿah is found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and he did live long enough to meet him; moreover, the man was from his own clan and resided in the same land.
Ibn Saʿd said, “He died during the governorship of Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh over Iraq.”
