He narrated from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh and Ṣayfī ibn Ṣuhayb.
Those who transmitted from him include the two Ḥammāds, Khārijah ibn Muṣʿab, Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī, ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Saʿīd, Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān, Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān al-Ḍubʿī, and others.
Aḥmad, al-Fallās, and Abū Ḥātim declared him weak. Ibn Maʿīn said, “worthless.” Al-Bukhārī remarked, “There is some doubt about him.” Al-Nasāʾī said, “He is not reliable,” and elsewhere, “weak.” Al-Dāraqutnī and the majority of scholars likewise judged him weak.
Ibn Ḥibbān went to extremes, saying, “It is not permissible to record his ḥadith except as a curiosity; he is alone in transmitting fabrications from reliable narrators.”
I (the author) say: al-Tirmidhī transmitted from him and said, “He is not strong in ḥadith.” He was the sole reporter of several traditions from Sālim.
I also note: the word qahramān is akin to wakīl (agent), hence he was called the Agent of the family of al-Zubayr.
Among the reports ascribed to him are the ḥadith, “Whoever enters the marketplace (1),” and the ḥadith, “Whoever sees a person afflicted and says, ‘Praise be to Allah who has favored me…’ (2),” and so on.
He died sometime in the 130s AH.
(1) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (3429) through Hammad b. Zayd and al-Muʿtamir b. Sulayman, who said: ʿAmr b. Dinar—the steward of the family of al-Zubayr—narrated to us from Salim b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever, while in the marketplace, says: la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu al-mulk wa lahu al-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit wa huwa hayyun la yamutu, biyadihi al-khayr wa huwa ʿala kulli shayʾin qadir (‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs sovereignty and praise; He gives life and causes death; He is Living and never dies; in His hand is all good, and He is capable of all things’), Allah will record for him one million good deeds, erase one million sins, and build for him a house in Paradise.” The chain is weak, but additional routes raise it to the level of hasan; see al-Mustadrak 1/538-539, Ibn al-Sunni (178), al-Tirmidhi (3428), and Ahmad, al-Zuhd, p. 214.
(2) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (3431), Ibn Majah (3892), and Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ 6/265; the chain is weak because of ʿAmr b. Dinar. Yet two other isnads render the hadith sound. Al-Tirmidhi (3432) transmits it through ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar al-ʿUmari, from Suhayl b. Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayra: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever sees a person afflicted and says: al-hamdu lillah alladhi ʿafani mimma ibtalaka bihi wa faddalani ʿala kathirin mimman khalaqa tafdilan (‘Praise be to Allah who has spared me from what He has tested you with and has preferred me greatly over many of His creatures’), that affliction will not touch him.” Abu Nuʿaym (5/13) also narrates it through Marwan b. Muhammad al-Tatari, who said: Walid b. ʿUtba told us, Muhammad b. Sawqah narrated from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar…; this isnad is acceptable as corroboration and strengthens the previous route, so the hadith is judged authentic.
