Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

With this same chain of transmission it was read aloud to Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī—while I was present and listening—and it was said to him:
“ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad al-Nāqid has related to you, Sufyān related to us, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār related to us, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘The prayer offered while sitting is worth half of the prayer offered while standing.’ (1)”

Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allah ibn Tāj al-Umānāʾ, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Mujāhid, Naṣr Allah ibn ʿAyyāsh, ʿAlī ibn Baqāʾ, ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Fārisī, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿAbd al-Dāʾim al-Wazzān, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Wāsiṭī, Aḥmad ibn ʿAzīz, Muḥammad ibn Qāymāz, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad the jurist, and others informed us, saying:

“Al-Ḥusayn ibn Mubārak, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar al-Ḥarīmī, and Zādhān al-Wāsiṭī informed us.” He said:

Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir—who was present—also informed us, as did Abū Muḥammad ibn Qiwām, Yūsuf ibn Abī Naṣr, ʿAlī ibn ʿUthmān, Muḥammad ibn Khāzim, Muḥammad ibn Hāshim, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Dāʾim, Sūnaj ibn Muḥammad, Fāṭimah al-Āmidiyyah, Khadījah al-Marātibiyyah, Hadiyyah bint ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, and a number of others. They said:

“Al-Ḥusayn ibn Mubārak informed us.” (h)

Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Dhikr, Mūsā ibn Qāsim, ʿUmar ibn Abī al-Futūḥ in Cairo, Yūsuf al-ʿĀdilī, Ḥasan al-Khallālī, Maḥmūd al-Sulṭānī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dayrqānūnī, ʿAlī ibn Maṭar, Aḥmad ibn Saʿd, ʿĪsā ibn Barakah, Aḥmad ibn Maktūm, and ʿAbd

= The isnad runs: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah → Amr ibn Dinar → Jabir. Concerning the expression “khudʿa,” it is transmitted with three vocalisations. The most reliable is khudʿa, with the kha fatḥa and the dal sukun. Thaʿlab reports that this was the Prophet’s own usage. Al-Khattabi explains that khudʿa means a single stratagem: once the combatant has been deceived even once, there is no reversal. Others say it means that the matter is settled by one ruse only. It is also narrated as khudʿa, with the kha ḍamma and the dal sukun; in this form it is a noun deriving from khidāʿ, like one would say “this is a laʿba (a game).” A third reading is khudʿa, with the kha ḍamma and the dal fatḥa, meaning that it deceives men, raises their hopes, and then fails to fulfil them. (1) The chain is fair (ḥasan). The hadith is likewise recorded by Abu Dawud (950), Muslim (735), and al-Nasai through the route of Jarir → Mansur → Hilal ibn Yasaf → Abu Yahya → Abd Allah ibn Amr. The report applies specifically to supererogatory prayers, for sitting while performing an obligatory prayer when one is able to stand is not permitted.
