and Maʿqil ibn ʿUbayd Allah, Hushaym, Abū ʿAwanah, Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Sammān, Sufyān ibn ʿUyainah, and a great many others.
It was also said that Nāfiʿ, the client of Ibn ʿUmar, transmitted from him.
Shuʿbah remarked, “I have never seen anyone in ḥadīth more precise than ʿAmr ibn Dīnār.”
Ibn ʿUyainah said: “ʿAmr never neglected to attend the mosque. He would be carried there on a donkey and never mounted it except while already seated. He used to declare, ‘I place a strict injunction on anyone who writes from me, for I myself never wrote anything from anyone; I relied entirely on memorization.’ He would convey ḥadīth according to meaning, and he was a jurist—may Allah have mercy on him.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Najīḥ said, “I have never seen anyone more learned in jurisprudence than ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—not ʿAṭāʾ, nor Mujāhid, nor Ṭāwūs.”
Ibn ʿUyainah also said, “ʿAmr is trustworthy, trustworthy, trustworthy.”
He added, “ʿAmr was of Persian descent.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn stated, “The people of Medina are not pleased with ʿAmr; they charge him with Shiʿite leanings and bias against Ibn al-Zubayr. Yet there is no problem with him—he is innocent of what they allege.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhri said: “Sufyān narrated to us from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, who said, ‘There was no one in our land—or, indeed, anywhere on earth—more knowledgeable than ʿAmr ibn Dīnār.’”
Isḥāq ibn Manṣūr al-Salūlī reported: “Ibn ʿUyainah narrated to us that Abū Jaʿfar said, ‘Meeting ʿAmr ibn Dīnār is one of the things that makes me all the more eager to perform ḥajj.’”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal transmitted from his father, from Sufyān, who said: “ʿAmr ibn Dīnār used to divide the night into three portions: one third for sleep, one third for reviewing his ḥadīth, and one third for prayer.”
Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated from Sufyān: “I asked Misʿar, ‘Among the people you have met, who was most meticulous in verifying ḥadīth?’ He replied, ‘I have not seen the like of al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and ʿAmr ibn Dīnār.’”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “Shuʿbah would not place anyone ahead of ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—not even al-Ḥakam.”
