Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, and it seemed as though a prophet had come among them.
Aḥmad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Maryam transmitted from Yaḥyā that he said, “Reliable, an authoritative proof.” Someone asked Yaḥyā, “Is Ḥabīb solid (thabt)?” He replied, “Yes, but he narrated only two ḥadiths.” He then added–it appears that Yaḥyā meant they are anomalous–the ḥadith: “The woman suffering prolonged bleeding is to perform the prayer even if blood drips onto the mat (1),” and the ḥadith: “Kissing is permitted for the fasting person (2).”
Abū Ḥātim said, “Truthful, trustworthy; he did not hear directly from Umm Salama.”
(1) Reported by Ibn Majah (no. 624), Book of Purification, chapter “The woman with istihada who has already counted the days of her periods,” through the chain Waki‘ – al-A‘mash – Habib b. Abi Thabit – ‘Urwa b. al-Zubayr – ‘A’isha. She said: “Fatima bt. Abi Hubayš came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: ‘Messenger of Allah, I have continuous bleeding and never become pure; must I abandon the prayer?’ He replied: ‘No. That is only a vein, not menstruation. Refrain from prayer during the days of your menses, then perform ghusl, and afterward make wudu for every prayer even if blood drips onto the mat.’” All the narrators are reliable. The hadith is also found in Ahmad 6/42; al-Tahawi, p. 61; al-Daraqutni, p. 78; and al-Bayhaqi 1/344. A fuller discussion appears in Naṣb al-Rayah 1/199–200 and al-Jawhar al-Naqi 1/344–345.
(2) The author erred here; the correct reference is to the hadith about omitting wudu after kissing, recorded by Abu Dawud (no. 180), al-Nasa’i 1/104–105, al-Tirmidhi (no. 86), al-Bayhaqi 1/126, and al-Daraqutni, p. 51. Its wording, through al-A‘mash – Habib b. Abi Thabit – ‘Urwa – ‘A’isha, is: the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, kissed one of his wives, then went out to pray without performing wudu. She remarked, “Who else but you?” and laughed.
Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, quoted in al-Jawhar al-Naqi 1/124, rejects the claim that Habib never heard from ‘Urwa, insisting that their meeting is beyond doubt. Abu Dawud likewise states in his Sunan: “Hamza al-Zayyat transmitted from Habib, from ‘Urwa b. al-Zubayr, from ‘A’isha, a sound hadith.” Ibn al-Turkumani comments that an explicit affirmation outweighs a mere denial.
The hadith Abu Dawud alludes to is the Prophet’s supplication, “O Allah, grant me well-being in my body, grant me well-being in my sight…,” graded hasan gharib by al-Tirmidhi.
Habib is not the sole transmitter of the kissing hadith. Hisham b. ‘Urwa also reports it from his father. Al-Daraqutni 1/50 narrates, via Waki‘ – Hisham – his father – ‘A’isha: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, kissed one of his wives and did not make wudu,” and she laughed. Al-Bazzar likewise transmits it with another sound isnad; all its narrators are those of the Sahih except al-Bazzar’s shaykh Isma‘il b. Ya‘qub b. Ṣubayḥ, who is trustworthy.
