Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Qays ibn Dīnār; others maintained it was Qays ibn Hind, while some mentioned only Hind.

He reported hadith from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, and Umm Salama—though it was said that he did not hear directly from the last two, and the narrations attributed to them appear in Ibn Mājah. He also narrated from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām—his report from him is in al-Tirmidhī, who remarked, “In my view he did not hear from him.” Among his other elders were Anas ibn Mālik, Zayd ibn Arqam, Abū Wāʾil, Zayd ibn Wahb, ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍamrah, Abū Ṭufayl, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Dharr al-Hamdānī, Abū Ṣāliḥ Dhakwān, al-Sāʾib ibn Farrūkh, Ṭāwūs, Abū l-Minhāl ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muṭʿim, Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, Kurayb, and ʿUrwah in the matter of the woman with prolonged bleeding—although some said it was ʿUrwah al-Murrī.

The chain then descends to ʿAbdah ibn Abī Lubābah and ʿUmārah ibn ʿUmayr—himself counted among the foremost scholars.

Those who transmitted from him include ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ—who was actually one of his own teachers—Ḥuṣayn, Manṣūr, al-Aʿmash, Abū Ḥuṣayn, Abū l-Zubayr, a number of other senior authorities, Ibn Jurayj, Ḥātim ibn Abī Ṣaghīrah, Misʿar, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Siyāh, Shuʿbah, al-Thawrī, al-Masʿūdī, Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ, Ḥamzah al-Zayyāt, and many others.

Ibn al-Madīnī said: “He has roughly two hundred hadiths.”

Aḥmad ibn Yūnus related from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh: “In Kūfah there were three men—and no fourth—Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, al-Ḥakam, and Ḥammād. They were the ones who issued legal verdicts, and everyone in Kūfah humbled himself before Ḥabīb.”

Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī said: “A Kufan, a Successor, reliable; he served as the muftī of Kūfah before Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān.”

Ibn al-Mubārak reported from Sufyān: “Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit narrated to us—he was a mainstay,” or words to that effect.

Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh also transmitted from Abū Yaḥyā al-Qattāt, who said, “I came to Ṭāʾif with…"
