charity for him.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhī through the transmission of Qutaybah (1), and our chain matches theirs.
Abū Nuʿaym, Khalīfah, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and others said that Qatādah died in the year 117 AH.
Khalīfah added: He is Qatādah ibn Diʿāmah ibn ʿAzīz ibn Zayd ibn Rabīʿah ibn ʿAmr ibn Karib ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Sadūs, Abū al-Khaṭṭāb; he passed away in Wāsiṭ in 117 AH.
Ibn ʿĀʾishah said: He died in Wāsiṭ while staying with Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qaṣrī.
Ibn Shawdhāb said: Qatādah appointed Maṭar as his executor.
Through my aforementioned chain to al-Baghawī in al-Jaʿdiyyāt: ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd told us; Shuʿbah told us, from Qatādah, from Zurārah ibn Awfā, from Ibn Masʿūd, regarding the verse, “On the day when some of your Lord’s signs come” (al-Anʿām 6:158), that it refers to the sun rising from the west (2).
Muḥammad ibn Sawāʾ reported from Shuʿbah who said: “I related to Sufyān the ḥadīth of Qatādah, from Abū Ḥassān, from Ibn ʿAbbās—namely, that the Prophet ﷺ garlanded the sacrificial animals and pierced their humps. Sufyān said to me: ‘Was there anyone in this world like Qatādah?!’”
Abū Dāwūd, commenting on the report of Qatādah from Abū Rāfiʿ, from Abū Hurayrah—“When one of you is invited to a meal and he arrives with a messenger, the messenger’s arrival counts as permission” (3)—remarked that Qatādah had not heard from Abū
