He was declared reliable by Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and others. His narrations appear in the Six Canonical Collections.

Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Aʿrābī said, “Most of his discourse concerned legal judgments, and he would remark:
‘By Allah, even if we have been careless, there are servants of Allah who have preferred obedience to Allah—Exalted is He—over their own desires.’
He also used to say, ‘May Allah let His ordeal pass over us and you, and make our hearts homelands that yearn for Him.’

It is said that he died in 123 AH; others said he died in 128 AH, at a very advanced age.

119 – ʿĀṣim ibn Abī al-Najūd al-Asadī, their freedman * (4, Kh, M – jointly)
The great imam, the foremost Qur’an reciter of his age, Abū Bakr al-Asadī, their client, of Kūfa.

His father’s name was Bahdalah; some claimed Bahdalah was his mother, but that is baseless—Bahdalah was indeed his father.

He was born during the rule of Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān.

He learned the Qur’an from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī and Zirr ibn Ḥubaysh al-Asadī, and he related ḥadith from both of them, as well as from Abū Wāʾil, Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd, and a group of the senior Successors.

It is also reported that he narrated from al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥassān al-Bakrī and Rifāʿah ibn Yathribī al-Tamīmī— or al-Taymī—both of whom were Companions.

He is counted among the younger Successors.

Those who transmitted from him include ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ and Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān—both of whom were his teachers—together with Sulaymān al-Taymī, Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, Shuʿbah, al-Thawrī, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Shaybān the grammarian, Abān ibn Yazīd, Abū ʿAwānah, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and many others.

He presided over Qur’an instruction for a time in Kūfa, and among those who recited to him were Abū Bakr [ibn ʿAyyāsh] and Ḥafṣ ibn Sulaymān,
