and you have enhanced my remembrance, for I was never obscure—yet some renown outshines other renown.
104 – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd al-Makkī * (ʿ)
A client of Banū Kinānah, the allies of Banū Zuhrah.
He narrated from: Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, al-Ḥusayn, Sibāʿ ibn Thābit, Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, Mujāhid, ʿAqīl ibn ʿUmayr, and several others.
Reported on his authority: Ibn Jurayj, Shuʿbah, Warqāʾ, Ḥammād ibn Zayd, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and many more.
He was declared reliable by ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī and others.
He counted among the senior teachers of Ibn ʿUyaynah, alongside ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, and Abū Isḥāq.
Ibn ʿUyaynah said: “Ibn Jurayj used to narrate to us from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd and would say, ‘He is an old shaykh,’ giving us the impression that he had already died. One day, while I was standing at a doorway, I heard a man say, ‘Let us enter to see ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd.’
“I asked, ‘Who is that?’
“He answered, ‘A shaykh who met Ibn ʿAbbās.’
“I said, ‘May I go in with you?’
“They replied, ‘Yes.’
“That day I heard hadiths from him. I then went to Ibn Jurayj, who was narrating from him.
“I said, ‘I myself have heard from him.’
“He asked, ‘Have you actually met him?’
“After that I kept visiting him until he died in 126 AH. He was trustworthy, and it is said that he lived to be eighty-six years old.”
I say: Several of his hadiths with elevated chains have reached us.
