Hammād, from Ibrāhīm, from the companions of ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “The deceased is to be washed an odd number of times, shrouded in an odd number of cloths, and perfumed with incense an odd number of times.” (1)
With this same chain, from Hammād: I heard Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Mujāhid, and Ibrāhīm say, “If you wish, fast, and if you wish, break the fast, though fasting is better”—meaning fasting in Ramadan while on a journey.
With this same chain, from Hammād: I asked Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib about a person in a state of major ritual impurity reciting the Quran. He replied, “Is it not within him?”
Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Burjulānī said, reporting from Isḥāq al-Sallūlī: I heard Dāwūd al-Ṭāʾī say, “Hammād ibn Abī Sulaymān was generous with food and liberal with dinars and dirhams.”
He also reported, through Zakariyyā ibn ʿAdī, from al-Ṣalt ibn Bisṭām, from his father, who said: “Hammād ibn Abī Sulaymān used to visit me and remain for the rest of the day. When he wished to leave he would say, ‘Look at what is under the cushion; tell them to make use of it,’ and I would find a large sum of dirhams.”
Al-Ṣalt ibn Bisṭām further said: “He provided the fast-breaking meal for fifty people every day in Ramadan; then, on the night of Eid al-Fiṭr, he clothed each one with a garment.”
ʿUthmān ibn Zufar al-Taymī narrated: I heard Muḥammad ibn Ṣabīḥ say, “When Abū al-Zinād arrived in Kūfa to oversee the zakat revenues, a man asked Hammād ibn Abī Sulaymān if someone could intercede with Abū al-Zinād on his behalf concerning some work. Hammād asked, ‘How much does your companion hope to obtain from Abū al-Zinād?’ He answered, ‘One thousand dirhams.’ Hammād said, ‘I have ordered five thousand dirhams for him, and I will not demean myself by petitioning him.’ The man replied, ‘May Allah reward you with goodness.’”
Al-Bukhārī said in his Ṣaḥīḥ (2): Hammād stated, “If he confesses once before the judge, …”
