al-Din ʿAbd al-Qadir al-Nuʿaymi (d. 927 AH) erred when he asserted that al-Dhahabī succeeded Taqī al-Din Ibn Taymiyyah at the Dar al-Hadith al-Sukariyya (1). He therefore inserted a biographical entry for him there (2) and repeated the claim, even though it seems that al-Dhahabī never actually held that post.
It appears that the word “Tankaziyya” was misread as “Sukariyya” (3); hence the man assumed that al-Dhahabī had presided over the latter, although he himself states elsewhere that al-Dhahabī took charge of the Dar al-Hadith al-Tankaziyya and even cites the very same supporting texts. In the section on the Dar al-Hadith al-Sukariyya—after recording the biography of its shaykh Taqī al-Din Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH)—he writes: “Then it was held after him by the ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī, namely Muḥammad…; afterward the office of shaykh of this Sukariyya passed to al-Ṣadr al-Mālikī.”
Shaykh Shams al-Din al-Sayyid says in his Dhayl al-ʿIbar (4) for the year 749 AH: “The imam Ṣadr al-Din Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam (5) al-Mālikī was teacher at the Sharabīshiyya and became shaykh of the Sukariyya after al-Dhahabī.” End of quote.
Ṣalāḥ al-Din al-Ṣafadī, in his History under the letter S, writes: “Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam… etc.” (6). He then states, in the entry “The Tankaziyya Dar al-Qurʾān wa’l-Hadith” of the same work, after describing its construction and endowment: “Al-Sayyid al-Ḥusaynī said in the Dhayl al-ʿIbar in the year 749 AH (7): The imam Ṣadr al-Din Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam al-Mālikī
