Narrated from him were Zubayd al-Yāmī, Misʿar, Shuʿbah, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ, and many others.
He was deemed reliable, an authoritative proof.
Sufyān said, “I do not think I ever saw anyone I would place ahead of Muhārib ibn Dithār.”
Ibn Saʿd said, “He was among the earliest Murjiʾites—those who deferred judgment about ʿAlī and ʿUthmān to God and would neither affirm their faith nor denounce them as unbelievers.”
He was declared trustworthy by Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn.
Ibn ʿUyaynah said, “I saw Muhārib issuing legal rulings in the mosque.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Idrīs narrated from his father: “I saw al-Ḥakam and Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān attending a judicial session of Muhārib ibn Dithār, one seated to his right and the other to his left.”
Sufyān al-Thawrī remarked, “When Muhārib was appointed judge, his family wept; and when he was dismissed, his family wept.”
Saʿd ibn al-Ṣalt said: Hārūn ibn al-Jahm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr said, “I was present in the court of Muhārib ibn Dithār when a man lodged a claim against another. The defendant denied it, so Muhārib asked, ‘Do you have any evidence?’
He replied, ‘Yes—so-and-so.’
His opponent exclaimed, ‘We belong to Allah! If he testifies against me, he will surely testify falsely; yet if you ask me about him, I will have to vouch for his integrity.’
When the witness arrived, Muhārib said, ‘Ibn ʿUmar narrated to us that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, on the Day of Resurrection birds will beat their beaks and disgorge what is in their crops out of terror, and the false witness’s feet will not remain firm on the ground before he is hurled into the Fire.” (1)’
He then asked, ‘What is your testimony?’
The man replied, ‘I have forgotten—let me go back and recall it.’
