Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal deemed him reliable. Ḍimām narrated from him, saying, “News of ʿUthmān’s murder reached us in Yemen and we were alarmed.” Some say that his given name was Ḥuyayy. Ibn Yūnus stated that he died in 128 AH. I (the author) say: It seems he lived beyond the age of one hundred.

It is said that he met Ibn Masʿūd.
He related ḥadith from his uncle Quṭbah ibn Mālik, Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī, al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, Usāmah ibn Sharīk, ʿAmr ibn Maymūn al-Awdī, and others.
Among those who reported from him are Shuʿbah, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shaybān the Grammarian, Zāʾidah, Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah, Isrāʾīl, Abū ʿAwanah, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and a number of others.
He was the oldest shaykh from whom Ibn ʿUyaynah heard.
Layth ibn Abī Sulaym said: “He met Ibn Masʿūd.”
Al-Nasāʾī and others declared him reliable, while Abū Ḥātim said he was truthful.
It is reported that he died in 125 AH, though some say he passed away a little later.
I believe he lived past one hundred years, and I have obtained his ḥadith with an elevated chain.
