“…‘The ṣaʿāfiqa (1) never uttered what the people said’—meaning al-Hakam.”
Ḍamrah reported from al-Awzāʿī:
“I met al-Hakam at Minā; he was a man of dignified bearing, his cloak pulled over his head.”
Abū Hammām said: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; he said: al-Awzāʿī narrated to me:
“While we were at Minā, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr asked me, ‘Have you met al-Hakam ibn ʿUtaybah?’
I answered, ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘Between its two lava fields there is no one more learned in jurisprudence than he.’
(And al-Awzāʿī added:) ‘And yet ʿAṭāʾ and his circle were there.’
Abū Nuʿaym said: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from al-Hakam, that he once said to a man,
“You are like a bird that sees the stars in the sky and imagines they are fish.”
Ibn Idrīs said: “I asked Shuʿbah, ‘When did al-Hakam die?’
He replied, ‘In the year 115 AH.’
Ibn Idrīs said, ‘I was born that very year.’
Abū Nuʿaym and others also dated his death to that year, though it has been said, ‘In 114,’ which is unreliable.”
Judge Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn ʿAbd al-Salām reported to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad the jurist reported to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ghanī reported to us; Naṣr ibn Aḥmad reported to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh reported to us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Maḥāmilī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; Muḥammad—meaning Ibn Jaʿfar—narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated, from al-Hakam, from Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from Abū Rāfiʿ:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from the Banū Makhzūm to oversee the alms. He said to Abū Rāfiʿ, ‘Come with me so that you may receive a share of it.’
Abū Rāfiʿ replied, ‘Not until I go to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him.’
So he went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him, and the Prophet said, ‘Charity is not permissible for us, and the client of a people is counted as one of them.’”
