Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Hakam from Miqsam—that is, the report on cupping (1).

Abu Khaythamah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Khazim narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Shaqīq, from ʿAbdullāh, who said:
“By Allah, the person who issues a legal verdict for people about everything they ask is surely insane.”

Al-Aʿmash said: Al-Hakam told me, “Had I heard this from you before today, I would not have given verdicts on many of the matters about which I used to issue fatwas.”

Judge Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Muslim narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated, from al-Hakam, who said:
“I accompanied a funeral procession when I was still a boy. Zayd ibn Arqam led the prayer over it, and I heard the people saying, ‘He pronounced four takbīrs over it.’”

Maʿqil ibn ʿUbaydullāh said: “I said to al-Hakam, ‘Abu Muhammad…’”

ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said: “I asked Yaḥyā, ‘Which of Ibrāhīm’s students is dearest to you?’ He replied, ‘Al-Hakam and Manṣūr—how closely matched they are!’”

Al-Madāʾinī said: “Al-Hakam ibn ʿUtaybah was a Kindite.”

It is also said that he was an Asadī client (mawlā).

Ḥajjāj ibn Muhammad said: I heard Abū Isrāʾīl say, “The very first day I came to know al-Hakam was the day al-Shaʿbī died. A man came asking about a ruling, and the people said, ‘Go to al-Hakam ibn ʿUtaybah.’”

Ahmad ibn Zuhayr said: Ibn Maʿīn narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us; from Mughīra, who said: “Whenever al-Hakam arrived in Medina, the Prophet’s column would be set aside for him so that he could pray facing it.”

Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: “I heard Ibn Abī Laylā say: ‘Al-Shaʿbī used to say…’”

(1) Ahmad said: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah transmitted it from Amr ibn Dinar, from Ata, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, stating that the Prophet underwent cupping while in the state of ihram. The same report was related by Ruh from Zakariyya ibn Ishaq, from Amr, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, and by Abd al-Razzaq from Mamar, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas. Ahmad added: These companions of Ibn Abbas mention nothing about fasting.
