68 – ʿAdī ibn Thābit al-Anṣārī al-Kūfī * (ʿ)
An Imām, ḥāfiẓ, and preacher; an Anṣārī from Kūfah and a grandson of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Khaṭmī.
He narrated from his own father,
and from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, Sulaymān ibn Ṣurad, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Khaṭmī, Zir ibn Ḥubaysh, Zayd ibn Wahb, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Abū Ḥāzim al-Ashjaʿī, Yazīd ibn al-Barāʾ, and many others.
Among those who transmitted from him are ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Abān ibn Taghlib, Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, Ashʿath ibn Sawwār, Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāt, Abū al-Yaqẓān ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmayr, Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq, Misʿar, Zayd ibn Abī Unaysa, Shuʿbah, al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ṣāliḥ, and a host of others.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and al-ʿIjlī judged him trustworthy, a verdict later echoed by al-Nasāʾī.
Abū Ḥātim said, “He is ṣadūq (reliable); he served as the imam of the Shīʿa mosque and their designated preacher.”
Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr stated, “ʿUbayd ibn ʿĀzib (1)—the brother of al-Barāʾ—is the grandfather of ʿAdī ibn Thābit. He narrated ḥadiths on ablution and menstruation, and both ʿUbayd and al-Barāʾ fought alongside ʿAlī in all his engagements (2).”
Another scholar said, “He is ʿAdī ibn Abān ibn Thābit ibn Qays ibn al-Khaṭīm al-Anṣārī al-Ẓafarī, and Thābit was a senior Companion.”
