65 – Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir al-Kalāʿī al-Khabāʾirī (M, 4), from Homs.
He narrated from Abū al-Dardāʾ, Tamīm al-Dārī, al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad, ʿAwf ibn Mālik, Abū Hurayrah, ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah, and a number of others.
It is likely that his reports from al-Miqdād and the like are mursal, meaning he did not hear them directly.
Among those who transmitted from him are Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir, ʿUfair ibn Maʿdān, Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, and many others.
He lived to a great age. He used to say, “I embraced Islam from its very beginning,” which shows that he was born during the Prophet’s lifetime.
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjli declared him trustworthy, and Abū Ḥātim said, “There is nothing wrong with him.”
Shuʿbah narrated—from Yazīd ibn Khumayr—who said: “I heard Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir; he had met the Prophet.”
Yahyā ibn Maʿīn said, “Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir al-Kalāʿī claimed that he read ʿUmar’s letter to them.”
Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir stated, “He was present at the conquest of al-Qādisiyyah.”
= Mansur, through Said ibn Jubayr, reports from Ibn Abbas on the verse: “Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Power” (97:1). He said: The Quran was sent down in its entirety on the Night of Power to the lowest heaven, at the station of the stars; thereafter Allah revealed it to His Messenger ﷺ gradually, one portion after another. He then cited: “And they say, ‘Why was the Quran not sent down to him all at once?’ (It was revealed) so that We might strengthen your heart thereby; and We have recited it in measured phases” (25:32). Al-Hakim declared the report sound, and the author of the Mukhtasar agreed. Al-Suyuti reproduced it in al-Durr al-manthur 6/370, adding that it is also narrated by Ibn al-Daris, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Marduyah, and al-Bayhaqi in the Dala’il.
