Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among them, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever commits illicit intercourse with a free woman or with another people’s slave woman, and she thereafter gives birth, the child is an illegitimate child; he neither inherits nor is inherited from.” (1)

Among them: “Do not wander about in the mosques; rather, wear a long shirt, and beneath it a waist-wrapper.”

Among them: “Fortune-telling—its beginning is reproach, its middle is remorse, and its end is torment on the Day of Resurrection.” (2)

Among the reports unique to ʿAmr is the narration of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Ḥabīb and Dāwūd, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, traced back to the Prophet: “A woman is not permitted to dispose of her property once her husband has gained authority over her marital bond.” (3)

Also his narration: “Whoever marries off his maiden daughter must not look at the area between her navel and her knees.” (4)

This was related by Sawwār Abū Ḥamzah from him, from his father, from his grandfather—traced back to the Prophet.

Abu Dawud (no. 818) also reports, on the authority of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri: “We were commanded to recite the Opening of the Book (al-Fatiha) and whatever else is easy.” All the transmitters are trustworthy. Ibn Hibban authenticated it (no. 453) via Abu Hurayra with the wording: “There is no prayer without reciting al-Fatiha and whatever else is easy.” See Nasb al-Raya, 1/364–365. (1) A sound (hasan) hadith related by al-Tirmidhi (no. 2113), Book of Inheritance, chapter “The annulment of the inheritance of a child born of fornication,” through Ibn Luhayʿa from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. Al-Tirmidhi adds: Others besides Ibn Luhayʿa have transmitted this report from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb through his father and grandfather, and the scholars agree that a child born of fornication does not inherit from his biological father. Abu Dawud (no. 2265) and al-Bayhaqi 6/260 also narrate it through Muhammad b. Rashid, from Sulayman b. Musa, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, with similar wording. (2) Although weak, it is supported by a corroborating narration from Abu Hurayra recorded by al-Tayalisi in his Musnad. The term al-ʿarafa denotes a position of authority. Imam al-Nawawi remarks: This hadith is a major proof for avoiding public office and leadership roles, especially for one who is not competent. Whoever accepts such a post without qualification and fails to act justly will regret it when he faces disgrace and punishment on the Day of Judgment. By contrast, one who is qualified and just will receive great reward, as numerous reports affirm. (3) Reported by Abu Dawud (no. 3547), Book of Trade and Agency, chapter “A woman’s gift without her husband’s permission.” The chain is sound (hasan). (4) Reported by Abu Dawud (nos. 496, 4114), Ahmad 2/187, and al-Darqutni, p. 85, with a sound (hasan) chain. A second, weaker chain occurs in Ibn ʿAdi and is cited by al-Zaylaʿi in Nasb al-Raya.
