The ḥadith master also said, “I examined his narrations and found that some transmitters actually name ʿAbd Allāh, while others relate the very same report without naming him. In certain isnāds I saw: ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb—from his father—from his grandfather Muḥammad—from ʿAbd Allāh; and in others: ʿAmr—from his grandfather Muḥammad.”
I add: This discrepancy occurs in a single, variant report, and ʿAmr never met his grandfather Muḥammad at all.
Among the ḥadiths transmitted from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh are the following:
Harmalah narrated to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith told me that ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb related to him—from his father—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr:
A man from Muzaynah said, “Messenger of Allah, what is your ruling on a mountain-grazing goat that is stolen?” He replied, “Its like, and the like of it, together with a deterrent punishment (nakāl).” The man asked, “What if it has already been brought into the night pen?” He said, “The hand is to be cut off when its value reaches the price of a shield.” (1)
Ibn ʿAjlān transmitted—from ʿAmr, from his father, from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh—a ḥadith concerning found property (luqaṭah). (2)
Aḥmad said: ʿAbd al-Razzaq related to us; Muḥammad—namely Ibn Rāshid—related to us, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, from ʿAmr, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “For every finger, ten camels are payable in blood-money.” (3)
