He publicly disavowed the Qadari doctrine, whereupon the ruling authorities were satisfied with him; Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz likewise declared him free of any association with that belief.
59 – Qays ibn Muslim Abū ʿAmr al-Jadalī * (ʿ)
The imām and ḥadith scholar, Abū ʿAmr al-Jadalī of Kufa.
He transmitted from: Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, and Mujāhid ibn Jabr.
Those who narrated from him include: Ayyūb ibn ʿĀʾidh, Abū Ḥanīfah, Misʿar, Shuʿbah, Abū al-ʿUmays, Sufyān al-Thawrī, and others.
Declared reliable by Aḥmad and many besides him.
Abū Dāwūd said, “He was a Murjiʾī.”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, reporting from Ibn ʿUyaynah, stated:
“They used to say, ‘Qays ibn Muslim has not lifted his head toward the sky for such-and-such a period, out of reverence for Allah.’”
I (the author) say: He died in the year 120 AH.
Lifting one’s head to the sky is, in fact, required of the Muslim so that he may determine the prayer times and recognize the stars by which one is guided—and Allah knows best.
