Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ said, “He died in 113 AH.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn added, “He passed away at the age of seventy-six.”
His son:
56 – Iyas ibn Muʿāwiyah Abū Wāthilah al-Muzanī
The judge of Baṣrah, a distinguished scholar, Abū Wāthilah.
He transmitted from his father, from Anas, Ibn al-Musayyib, and Saʿīd ibn Jubayr.
From him narrated Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, Shuʿbah, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Ḍāʾiʿ (1), and others.
People held him up as the very example of intelligence, shrewdness, nobility, and sound judgment.
Only a few reports are related from him, yet Ibn Maʿīn declared him reliable.
He has some narrations in the introduction to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
Our teacher al-Mizzī gathered his accounts exhaustively in his Tadhīb, and Ibn ʿAsākir had done so before him.
He died in 121 AH, still a man in his prime.
57 – Makḥūl al-Dimashqī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh (M, 4)
The leading scholar of the people of Syria.
His kunyah was Abū ʿAbd Allāh; some said Abū Ayyūb, and others called him Abū Muslim al-Dimashqī, the jurist. His house stood at one end of the Sunday Market (Sūq al-Aḥad).

(1) He was also nicknamed al-Dall (the lost one), yet this does not imply religious deviance. He is a reliable and intelligent man from Basra; the epithet arose only because he once lost the road to Mecca, as related by al-Samʿani and al-Azdi.
