Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

that when he left Medina he turned toward it, wept, and then said,
“O Muzāḥim, do you fear (1) that we might be among those whom Medina has cast out? (2)”

Ibn Isḥāq transmitted from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Ḥakīm:
“I heard ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz say, ‘I departed from Medina while no man was more knowledgeable than I, yet when I reached Syria I forgot.’”

Maʿmar related from al-Zuhrī:
“I spent a night in conversation with ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and narrated traditions to him. He said, ‘Everything you have mentioned tonight I had already heard, but you preserved it whereas we forgot.’”

ʿUqayl reported from Ibn Shihāb:
that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz informed him that al-Walīd once summoned him at midday and found him with a furrowed brow.
“He said: I sat down, and with him there was no one except Ibn al-Rayyān standing sword-in-hand. Al-Walīd asked, ‘What is your ruling on someone who reviles the caliphs? Do you hold that he should be killed?’
“I remained silent, so he scolded me, saying, ‘What is the matter with you?’ I stayed silent, and when he repeated the question I said, ‘Put to death, O Commander of the Believers?!’
“He replied, ‘No, but he has cursed the caliphs.’
“I said, ‘In my view he should be given an exemplary punishment.’
“Al-Walīd lifted his head toward Ibn al-Rayyān and said, ‘He is indeed outstanding among them.’”

ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Yazīd al-Aylī reported:
“Sulaymān performed the pilgrimage accompanied by ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Lightning and thunder struck them so violently that their hearts almost leapt from their chests. Sulaymān said, ‘Abū Ḥafṣ, have you ever seen—or even heard of—a night like this?’
“He replied, ‘O Commander of the Believers, this is the sound of Allah’s mercy; how would it be if you heard the sound of Allah’s punishment!’”

Ibn ʿUyaynah transmitted from an unnamed man:
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said, “I have not lied since I learned that lying harms its perpetrator.”

ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mājishūn narrated to us from ʿAbd Allah ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
ʿUmar said, “We used to discuss”—and in another version, “People claim that this world will not come to an end until …”
