Ibn Saʿd, in the third tier of the Successors from Medina, wrote: “His mother was Umm ʿĀṣim bint ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.”
They said that he was born in the year 63 AH.
Ibn Saʿd also said: “He was trustworthy and reliable, possessed of jurisprudence, knowledge, and scrupulousness; he transmitted many hadiths; he was a just imam—may Allah ennoble him and be pleased with him.”
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār added: “His full brothers were ʿĀṣim, Abū Bakr, and Muḥammad.”
Al-Fallās related: “I heard al-Khuraybī say, ‘Al-Aʿmash, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā were all born the year al-Ḥusayn was killed—that is, 61 AH.’”
Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ and a number of other authorities affirmed the same birth year.
Saʿīd ibn ʿUfayr described him as “brown-skinned, with a delicate and handsome face, slender of build, a fine beard, deep-set eyes, and on his forehead the scar of an animal’s kick; grey hairs had begun to streak his hair.”
Ismāʿīl al-Khuṭabī said: “I found his description in one of the books: ‘fair-skinned, with a delicate and handsome face, slender of build, a fine beard, deep-set eyes, and on his forehead the mark of a hoof…’”
