(1) He is Abd al-Rahman b. Sulayman b. Abd Allah b. Hanzala al-Ansari, better known as Ibn al-Ghasil. The epithet “al-Ghasil” was first given to Hanzala, his grandfather, because when Hanzala was martyred at the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Your companion is being washed by the angels; ask his wife.” She explained that he had gone out in a state of major ritual impurity when he heard the alarm, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “That is why the angels washed him.” The report was transmitted by Ibn Ishaq and others with an authentic chain; it was judged sound by Ibn Hibban and by al-Hakim (3/204), and the author of the present work endorses their verdict in his abridgement.
