He transmitted from Jābir ibn Samurah, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, and a number of other Companions.
Those who transmitted from him include his son al-ʿAlāʾ, al-Aʿmash, Manṣūr, Abū Isḥāq, and many others.
Ibn Maʿīn said, “He heard from no Companion except al-Barāʾ and ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbadah.” (1)
It is related that the governor ʿUmar ibn Hubayrah wanted to appoint al-Musayyab as judge, but he replied, “That would not please me— even if the pillars of your mosque were made of gold.”
It is said that he died in 105 AH.
37 – ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah al-Hudhalī * (M, 4)
A descendant of Ibn Masʿūd, an imam, exemplar, and devoted worshipper; Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Hudhalī al-Kūfī, the brother of the Medinan jurist ʿUbayd Allāh.

(1) Amir b. Abda is not a Companion but a Successor, as stated by several leading scholars. Ibn Abd al-Barr vacillated: he first placed him among the Successors, then—through oversight—listed him among the Companions and claimed that he reported from the Prophet. He cited, for example, the report found in the introduction to Sahih Muslim 1/12, transmitted through Amir b. Abda, in which Abd Allah b. Masud says: “Satan sometimes takes on a human form, comes to a group, and narrates fabricated stories. When they disperse, one of them says, ‘I heard a man whose face I recognize, though I do not know his name, telling such-and-such.’” See also al-Isaba, no. 6555.
