Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He replied, “Gabriel—peace be upon him—came to me and said, ‘There is menstrual blood on them.’”

Chain of transmission: weak, due to the weakness of Ṣāliḥ (1) and his teacher.

32 – Abū al-Ḥubāb Saʿīd ibn Yasār al-Madanī * (ʿ)
A freedman of the Mother of the Believers Maymūnah; some said rather that he was the freedman of al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī.

He transmitted from: Abū Hurayrah, Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī, Ibn ʿAbbās, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar.

Those who reported from him include his nephew Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Muzarrid, Saʿīd al-Maqburī, and Abū Ṭuwālah.

(1) Al-Daraqutni judged the report “abandoned (matruk).” Its transmitter Furat b. al-Saib was labelled by al-Bukhari “munkar al-hadith,” by Ibn Maʿin “worthless,” and again by al-Daraqutni and others “abandoned”; the narration is therefore invalid. The sound view is that the verse “Khudhu zinatakum ʿinda kulli masjid” (“Take your adornment at every mosque,” Qurʾan 7:31) was revealed as a rebuttal of the idol-worshippers who used to circumambulate the Kaʿba naked. Muslim (no. 3028) and Ibn Jarir (8/160) relate—using Ibn Jarir’s wording—through Shuʿbah, Salamah b. Kuhayl, Muslim al-Batin, Saʿid b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas: “Men and women performed tawaf unclothed: the men by day, the women by night. A woman would chant, ‘Today some—or all—of it will appear; yet whatever appears I do not permit.’ God then revealed: ‘Take your adornment at every mosque.’ ” Al-ʿAwfi reports that Ibn ʿAbbas explained: certain men were circling the House naked, so God commanded adornment, meaning clothing that conceals the private parts, in addition to any fine garments and personal effects; the same was said by Mujahid, ʿAtaʾ, Ibrahim al-Nakhai, Saʿid b. Jubayr, Qatada, al-Suddi, al-Dahhak, and Malik from al-Zuhri, among other early authorities, all affirming that the verse concerns the polytheists’ naked tawaf. Ibn Hazm records consensus that the verse requires covering the ʿawra (private parts). Imam al-Nawawi adds: “In the pre-Islamic period people performed tawaf naked, discarded their clothes, left them on the ground to be trampled until they decayed—this was called al-liqaʾ. When Islam came, God commanded the covering of the ʿawra, saying: ‘Take your adornment at every mosque,’ and the Prophet ﷺ declared: ‘No one may circumambulate the House naked.’ ” (*) Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat 5/284; al-Bukhari, Tarikh 3/520; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil 4/72; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-kamal, 512; Ibn Hajar, Tadhhib al-tahdhib 3/31/2; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam 4/253; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya 9/314; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 4/102; al-Dhahabi, Khulasat tadhhib al-kamal, 144; al-Dhahabi, Shadharāt al-dhahab 1/153.
