He was declared reliable by Abū Zurʿah and Abū Ḥātim.
Al-Bukhārī and several others said that he died in 117 AH.
I (the author) add: he was in his eighties when he passed away.
Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Tāj al-Umanaʾ and Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAsrūn related to us—through ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzāz—who said: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Fuḍaylī informed us; he said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-ʿAbbād informed us; he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Fāmī narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; he said: Qutaybah narrated to us; he said: al-Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit say: ‘The descendants of Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah have sought my permission to marry their daughter to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. I do not give permission—indeed, I will never give permission—unless the son of Abī Ṭālib intends to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter instead. She is only a part of me; whatever distresses her distresses me, and whatever harms her harms me.’ (1)”
All of the canonical compilers except Ibn Mājah recorded this ḥadīth through the transmission of Qutaybah.
