He went on, saying, “Steady, people of Yathrib. We would not have spurred our camels all this way had we not been certain that he is the Messenger of Allah. To bring him out today means breaking with all the Arabs, the killing of your best men, and the swords biting into you. If you are a people who can endure the bite of the sword when it reaches you, the death of your nobles, and estrangement from every Arab tribe, then take him—your reward is with Allah. But if you fear weakness within yourselves, then leave him; that will be a clearer excuse for you before Allah.”
We said, “Stretch out your hand, Asʿad. By Allah, we shall never abandon this pledge nor seek to annul it.” We then stood and pledged allegiance to him one by one, he binding us to his terms and promising us Paradise in return.
Yahya ibn Sulaym inserted in the middle of his report that the Prophet’s uncle al-ʿAbbās said to him, “Nephew, I do not know who these people are who have come to you; I am well acquainted with the folk of Yathrib.” The narrator added: “One or two men gathered around him, and when al-ʿAbbās looked at our faces he said, ‘These are youths I do not recognize.’ We then asked, ‘On what basis shall we pledge allegiance to you?’”
Abu Nuʿaym narrated: Zakariyya related from al-Shaʿbi who said: The Prophet ﷺ went, accompanied by his uncle al-ʿAbbās, to the seventy Helpers at al-ʿAqabah beneath the tree. He said, “Let your spokesman speak and keep the address brief, for a spy from the idolaters is watching you.” Asʿad replied, “Ask, O Muhammad, for your Lord whatever you wish; then ask for yourself, and finally tell us what we shall have from Allah.” He said, “I ask you, for the sake of my Lord, to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him; and I ask, on my own behalf and that of my Companions, that you give us shelter, support us, and defend us from whatever you defend yourselves.” They asked, “And what shall be ours if we do that?” He answered, “Paradise.” They said, “Then it is yours.”
Abu Nuʿaym also narrated: Zakariyya related from al-Shaʿbi who said: The Prophet ﷺ, together with his uncle al-ʿAbbās, went to the seventy Helpers at al-ʿAqabah beneath the tree. He said, “Let your spokesman speak and keep the address brief, for a spy from the idolaters is near you.” Asʿad said, “Ask, O Muhammad, for your Lord whatever you wish; then ask for yourself, and tell us what we shall have from Allah.” He replied, “I ask you, for the sake of my Lord, to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him; and I ask, on behalf of myself and my Companions, that you give us shelter, support us, and protect us from that which you protect yourselves.” They said, “And what will we receive if we do so?” He said, “Paradise.” They responded, “Then you shall have it.”
Ahmad ibn Hanbal likewise transmitted it from Yahya ibn Zakariyya ibn Abi Zāʾidah, who said: Mujālid narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbi, from Abu Masʿud al-Ansari to the same effect, who said:
