It is said that his client-allegiance (walaʾ) was to the clan of Jumah; he was among the mawālīd of al-Jund (1) and was brought up in Mecca.
He was born during the caliphate of ʿUthmān.

He also transmitted in mursal form from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and from Abū Bakr, ʿAttāb ibn Asīd, ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās, and a number of others.
