Abū al-Malīḥ said: A man came to Maymūn ibn Mihrān to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Maymūn said, “I do not approve of her for you.”
The man asked, “Why not?”
He replied, “Because she is fond of jewelry and fine garments.”
The suitor said, “I can give her all of that.”
Maymūn answered, “Now I do not approve of you for her.”

Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Maymūnī related: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal once told me, “I regard your grandfather’s scrupulousness as comparable to that of Ibn Sīrīn.”

Abū al-Malīḥ said: A man said to Maymūn, “Abū Ayyūb, the people will remain in good so long as Allah keeps you among them.”
He replied, “Mind your own business; the people will remain in good so long as they fear their Lord.”

Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated: Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd said, “I wrote to Maymūn ibn Mihrān after a plague had struck their land, asking about his family. He wrote back: ‘Your letter has reached me, and seventeen persons from my household and inner circle have died. I detest affliction when it arrives, but once it has passed I would not wish that it had never been.’”

Abū al-Malīḥ transmitted from Maymūn: “Whoever sins in private should repent in private, and whoever sins openly should repent openly; for people reproach and do not forgive, whereas Allah forgives and does not reproach.”

Khālid ibn Ḥayyān al-Raqqī narrated from Jaʿfar ibn Burqān: Maymūn ibn Mihrān said to me, “Jaʿfar, tell me to my face what I dislike, for a man does not truly advise his brother until he confronts him with what he dislikes.”

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated from Abū al-Malīḥ, who said: Maymūn declared, “If someone goes to the door of a ruler and is denied entry, let him go to the houses of the Most Merciful—they are always open. Let him pray two rakʿahs (units of prayer) and ask for his need.”

Maymūn also said: Muḥammad ibn Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam once asked me, “What prevents you from enrolling in the dīwān (state register) so that you would have a share in Islam?”
I replied, “I hope that I shall have shares….”
