Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and Samurah ibn Jundub, Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, Muʿāwiyah, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd—though his reports from the latter are mursal—as well as others besides.

He likewise narrated from Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī, Bushayr ibn Kaʿb, Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥimyārī, Yaḥyā ibn Yaʿmar, Ḥanẓalah ibn ʿAlī, and a number of others.

He was one of the great reservoirs of knowledge.

Those who transmitted from him include his two sons Ṣakhr and Sahl; Maṭar al-Warrāq; Muḥārib ibn Dithār; al-Shaʿbī; Qatādah; Saʿd ibn ʿUbaydah; al-Mughīrah ibn Subayʿ; al-Walīd ibn Thaʿlabah al-Ṭāʾī; Abū Rabīʿah al-Iyādī; Abū Hāshim al-Rummānī; Ajlaḥ ibn ʿAbd Allāh; Bashīr ibn al-Muhājir; Thawāb ibn ʿUtbah; Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim; Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid; Dāwūd ibn Abī al-Furāt; Saʿīd al-Jurayrī; Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayyān al-Qurashī; ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khālid al-Ḥanafī; ʿUthmān ibn Ghiyāth; ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurasānī; ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib; ʿĪsā ibn ʿUbayd al-Kindī; Fāʾid Abū al-ʿAwwām; Kahmas ibn al-Ḥasan; Mālik ibn Mighwāl; Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān; Muqātil ibn Sulaymān, the Qur’an exegete; Abū Hilāl Muḥammad ibn Sulaym; Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Thaqafī; and many others.

Abū Bakr al-Athram said: I asked Abū ʿAbd Allāh, “What do you say about the two sons of Buraydah?”

He replied, “As for Sulaymān, I have no reservations about him; but as for ʿAbd Allāh—” Then he fell silent, after which he said, “Wakīʿ used to say that they regarded Sulaymān ibn Buraydah more favorably than ʿAbd Allāh,” or words to that effect.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad related from his father, who said: “The narrations that Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid reports from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah are objectionable; Abū al-Munīb’s as well. It seems the flaw lies with these transmitters.”

Isḥāq al-Kawsaj reported from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn: “He is reliable.” The same verdict was given by Abū Ḥātim and al-ʿIjlī.

Abū Tumaylah narrated from Rumaīḥ ibn Hilāl al-Ṭāʾī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, who said: “I was born three days into the caliphate of ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him. One of our servants came and brought my father the glad tidings while he was sitting with ʿUmar, so he said to him, ‘You are free.’

“My twin brother Sulaymān was born after me, and then another boy came…”
