Abū al-Ḥasan al-Maymūnī said: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh remark,
“Abū Ṣāliḥ had an impressively long beard. Whenever he mentioned ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) he would weep, his beard would quiver, and he would exclaim, ‘Ah, ah!’”
Abū ʿAbd Allāh also spoke of his many virtues.
Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, transmitting from al-Aʿmash, said:
“Abū Ṣāliḥ used to give the call to prayer. One day the imam was late, so he led us himself. Out of tenderness and constant weeping he could scarcely finish the prayer.”
Abū Ḥātim said: “He is reliable and sound in ḥadith; his narrations are admissible as proof.”
It is also reported that whenever Abū Hurayrah saw Abū Ṣāliḥ he would say, “A man like this has every right to belong to the clan of Banū ʿAbd Manāf.”
I say: He died in 101 AH.
11 – Abū Ṣāliḥ Bādhām * (4)
He is also called Bādhān.
He narrated from his patroness Umm Hāniʾ, from her brother ʿAlī, from Abū Hurayrah, and from Ibn ʿAbbās.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Qilābah, al-Aʿmash, al-Suddī, Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī, Muḥammad ibn Sūqah, Mālik ibn Mighwal, Sufyān al-Thawrī, and ʿAmmār ibn Muḥammad, the last person to narrate from him.
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said: “There is nothing wrong with him, but whenever al-Kalbī reports from him, the report is worthless.”
Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān said: “I never saw any of our companions abandon him.”
Ibn ʿAdī said: “The bulk of what he relates is Qurʾanic exegesis; very little of it comes with a full isnād.”
Al-Nasāʾī said: “He is not reliable.”
That is how it appears in my copy, but the correct wording is “not strong,” as though it
