Sunayd ibn Dāwūd said in his Tafsīr: “ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād al-Muhallabī reported to us, from ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, from ʿIkrimah, concerning a man who said to his servant: ‘If I do not flog you one hundred lashes, then my wife is divorced.’ ʿIkrimah replied: ‘He neither lashes his servant nor divorces his wife; this is one of Satan’s footsteps.’
I say: This is plain evidence that ʿIkrimah held the view that an oath of divorce pronounced in anger is one of Satan’s provocations, and therefore no divorce is effected thereby—Allah knows best.
It is also said that the word ʿIkrimah denotes the female pigeon.
