Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAṭṭār and Yaḥyā ibn Salīm reported this same text from Ibn Khuthaym by a different chain, namely: from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir; that version will be mentioned later.
Al-Bakkāʾī relates from Ibn Isḥāq that, once the delegation had departed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAbdarī to teach them the recitation of the Qur’an and instruct them in the faith. He took up residence with Asʿad ibn Zurārah. ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar told me that Muṣʿab used to lead them in prayer, for the Aws and the Khazraj were unwilling for one of the two tribes to lead the other.
Ibn Isḥāq adds: In Medina Muṣʿab came to be known as “the Reciter.”
Muḥammad ibn Abī Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn ḤunAYf narrated to me, from his father, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, who said: “I used to guide my father after he lost his sight. Whenever I took him out for the Friday prayer and he heard the call to prayer, he would invoke blessings upon Abū Umāmah Asʿad ibn Zurārah and ask Allah to forgive him. I said, ‘Father, why is it that when you hear the adhān for Friday you invoke blessings upon Abū Umāmah?’ He replied, ‘My son, he was the first to hold a Friday congregation for us in Medina, at a hollow in the volcanic tract of Banū Bayāḍah called Naqīʿ al-Khaḍamāt.’ I asked, ‘How many of you were there that day?’ He said, ‘Forty men.’
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reports from Ibn Shihāb (al-Zuhrī): When the pilgrimage season arrived, a group of the Anṣār came for Hajj—among them Muʿādh ibn ʿAfrāʾ, Asʿad ibn Zurārah, Rāfiʿ ibn Mālik, Dhiqwān, ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Taghlib, Abū al-Haytham ibn al-Tayyihān, and ʿUwaym ibn Sāʿidah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them, informed them of his mission, and recited the Qur’an to them. Their hearts were convinced and put at ease; they recognized what they had already been hearing from the People of the Scripture and so confirmed his truthfulness. They then said, ‘You are aware of the bloodshed that has taken place between the Aws and the Khazraj, and we are eager to follow whatever guidance Allah gives you…’
