Yunus and several others transmitted from Ibn Ishaq, who said: “Yazid ibn Abi Habib told me, on the authority of Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Yazani, from Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Sunabihi—ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAsilah—who said: ʿUbada ibn al-Samit related to me:
‘We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the first ʿAqabah while we were twelve men. We gave him the pledge taken from women: that we would not associate anything with Allah, would not steal, would not commit adultery, would not kill our children, would not invent any calumny of our own fabrication, and would not disobey him in anything that is right. All this was before fighting had been ordained. If you fulfil that pledge, Paradise is yours; but if you lapse in any part of it, your case rests with Allah—if He wills He forgives, and if He wills He punishes.’
Both al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded this report through Qutaybah, from al-Layth, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib.
Al-Khadr ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman and Ismaʿil ibn Abi ʿAmr informed us, saying: al-Hasan ibn ʿAli ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Bann narrated to us; he said: My grandfather Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn narrated to us; he said: Abu al-Qasim ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAli ibn Abi al-ʿAla narrated to us in the year 479 AH; he said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿUthman al-Muʿaddil narrated to us; he said: ʿAli ibn Yaʿqub narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Qurashi narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn ʿAʾidh narrated to us; he said: Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash informed me, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthman ibn Khuthaym, from Ismaʿil ibn ʿUbayd ibn Rafaʿah, from ʿUbada ibn al-Samit, who said:
‘We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to listen and obey in both energy and weariness, to spend in Allah’s cause in hardship and ease, to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, to speak for the sake of Allah without fearing the blame of any critic, and to support him when he arrives among us in Yathrib, protecting him just as we protect ourselves and our wives. In return, Paradise is ours.’
Zuhayr ibn Muʿawiyah transmitted a similar version from Ibn Khuthaym, from Ismaʿil ibn ʿUbayd ibn Rafaʿah, from his father, affirming the same pledge.
