generous, and the poet Dhū al-Rumma even composed verses in his praise. He had been afflicted with leprosy and would therefore bathe himself in copious quantities of clarified butter.(1) When Yūsuf ibn ʿUmar(2) assumed authority over Iraq, he arrested Bilāl and tortured him until he died, in the early 120s AH.
It is said that one day Abū Burdah boasted of his father and of his father’s Companionship, whereupon al-Farazdaq remarked:
Had Abū Mūsā possessed no distinction
save that he once cupped the Prophet ﷺ,
that alone would suffice.
Abū Burdah took offense and replied, “Indeed, he never cupped anyone else.”
Al-Farazdaq retorted, “Abū Mūsā was far too God-fearing to experiment with cupping on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Abū Burdah fell silent, seething with anger.
