Bakkār ibn Muḥammad narrated from Ibn ʿAwn:
Whenever Muḥammad was with his mother, anyone who did not know him would have thought he was ill, so hushed was his speech in her presence. (1)
Azhar transmitted from Ibn ʿAwn, who said:
If people mentioned someone’s fault while sitting with Muḥammad, he would respond by recalling the best qualities he knew about that person.
A group once came to him and said, “We have spoken ill of you; please declare us excused.”
He answered, “I cannot declare lawful for you anything that Allah has made unlawful.” (2)
Jaʿfar ibn Burqān reported from Maymūn ibn Mihrān:
I arrived in Kūfa intending to buy textiles. I went to Ibn Sīrīn there and bargained with him. Whenever he sold me a kind of cloth he would ask, “Are you satisfied?” I would say, “Yes.” He repeated the question three times, then summoned two men to witness the transaction. He would never buy or sell with the Ḥajjājī dirhams. When I saw his scrupulousness, I purchased everything I needed that he had for sale, even the rolls of ordinary cloth. (3)
Abū Kudayna related from Ibn ʿAwn:
If a dirham zayf (counterfeit coin) or a sittūq (clipped coin) came into Ibn Sīrīn’s hands, he refused to use it for buying. On the day he died he still possessed five hundred such defective coins. (4)
ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ reported that Ibn ʿAwn said:
The bequest of Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn was the same counsel Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAmrah had left to his household and children: to fear Allah, to set their mutual affairs right, and to obey Allah and His Messenger if they were true believers. He also charged them with the words by which Abraham counselled his sons—and so did Jacob—when he said: “My sons, Allah has chosen the religion for you; so do not die except in submission to Him.” ⦗Al-Baqarah 2:132⦘
