The Ḥadith of the Day of Buʿāth:
Yūnus narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: al-Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd ibn Muʿādh related to me from Maḥmūd ibn Labīd, who said:
When Abū l-Hayṣar Anas ibn Rāfiʿ came to Mecca accompanied by a group of young men from Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal—among them Iyās ibn Muʿādh—seeking an alliance with Quraysh against their kinsmen, the Khazraj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of their arrival and went to them. He said, “Shall I not offer you something better than what has brought you here?”
They asked, “And what is that?”
He replied, “I am the Messenger of Allah; Allah has sent me to His servants.” He then explained Islam to them and recited the Quran.
Iyās, a mere youth at the time, exclaimed, “My people, by Allah, this is better than what you have come for!”
Abū l-Hayṣar thereupon scooped up a handful of pebbles, hurled them in Iyās’s face, and said, “Leave us alone! By my life, we have come for something else.” Iyās fell silent, while the Prophet ﷺ withdrew from them. They returned to Medina, and not long afterward the battle of Buʿāth flared up between the Aws and the Khazraj. Soon after, Iyās ibn Muʿādh died.
Maḥmūd ibn Labīd said: Those of my clan who were present at his death told me that they kept hearing him proclaiming Allah’s oneness, magnifying Him, praising Him, and glorifying Him until he passed away; they never doubted that he died a Muslim, for a spark of Islam had entered his heart in that very gathering when he listened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
